How the score works
The score is the sum of six things a strong hook does, each checked by a fixed rule — no AI, no guessing, so the same headline always gets the same number. We look at the hook type (is there a real angle?), the curiosity gap (does it make you need line two?), specificity (numbers and names beat vague adjectives), reading level (we aim below 5th grade), length and rhythm for where it will run, and weak words (hedging, jargon, talking about "us" instead of "you"). The rules are distilled from direct-response copywriting frameworks — not from any black box. Want three AI rewrites too? That button runs a real model and is limited to a few per day; the score above never runs out.

What makes a hook score high
- It has a real angle — a question, a how-to, a warning, or a specific result. A flat statement scores low no matter how polished it sounds.
- It opens a loop — it tells you enough to make you curious, but not so much that you can stop reading.
- It's specific — "11 booked jobs in 30 days" beats "more leads." Numbers, timeframes, and named outcomes read as proof.
- It's plain — a busy owner should get it at a glance. We reward writing below a 5th-grade reading level.
Common questions
- Is the score AI?
- No. The 0-100 score is computed by fixed rules right in your browser, so it's instant and identical every time. Only the optional "3 AI rewrites" button uses a model.
- Why does the platform picker change my score?
- A great Facebook headline and a great email subject aren't the same length. The picker adjusts the length and rhythm rules for where the hook will actually run.
- What's a good score?
- 80 or above is strong. 60-79 is workable — fix the flagged rows. Under 60, rewrite it. The breakdown tells you exactly which part is dragging you down.
